ABOUT OUR CLASSES

Traditional karate emphasizes kata (forms), bunkai (self-defense applications) & self-esteem. Forms are practiced with applications, so they can be used in effective self defense. Kata are essentially a living dictionary of martial arts techniques disguised in forms. We emphasize karate to be used only for self-defense & self-improvement. When you walk into our class, you will start learning basic stances, blocks, kicks, strikes as well as traditions and our goal it to make you comfortable and teach you to love this art and make it a 'way of life'.

WHAT IS KARATE?

Karate is a form of self-defense, philosophy & a way to improve spirit, character, self-esteem & self-worth. The word karate is made up of two Japanese words: kara meaning empty & te meaning hand. Thus karate is the form of empty hand (weaponless) self-defense. Our classes focus on Shorin-Ryu Karate, a traditional Okinawan art. In our classes, you will learn traditions along with devastating self-defense techniques.

In traditional karate training, breaking is a very minor part of the art. Karate teaches self defense

through unique forms (kata) that help teach balance, focus & self-defense.

WHAT IS KOBUDO?

Kobudo is the ancient way of martial arts weapons. All Shorin-Ryu practitioners also learn to use traditional weapons of Okinawa as well as some modern weapons. These include nunchaku, tonfa (batons), kama (sickles), sai, surichin (weighted rope), manriki (chain), kuwa (hoe), tsue (cane), katana (sword), naginata (halberd), yari (spear), bo (6-foot staff), hanbo (3-foot staff), kioga (expandable baton), kobutan (short stick) and nitan bo (two sticks). Kobudo was created after King Sho Shin of Okinawa outlawed bladed weapons in the 15th century because of his non-violent Buddhist beliefs. His peasants; however, were more practical and trained with farming implements as weapons of self defense.

FUN AT KARATE

Expect to learn some Japanese, self-esteem, self-confidence & respect for others.

And plan to enjoy your training.

WHY LEARN KARATE?

Comparative studies showed that a person can expect to burn 700 to 950 calories/hour in karate training. One study compared karate to aerobic kickboxing (400 calories), pilates (350-400 calories), jogging (500 calories), bicycling (450-700 calories), tai chi (400 calories), intense weight training (215-430 calories), swimming (500 calories), rollerblading (420 calories), boxing (700 calories), aerobics (450 calories) and other activities. Karate stood at the top. In addition to getting a good workout, one can feel my comfortable walking the streets of Phoenix knowing that he or she can defend oneself at a moment's notice. This peace of mind alone should be enough.
